The Best Time for Teide Stargazing: Moon Phase, Season and Weather
When to book a Teide stargazing tour: why the moon phase matters more than the month, which planets are up when, and how the calima and cloud affect your night.

The honest answer is that the month barely matters and the moon phase decides everything. Teide National Park records more than 300 clear or partly clear nights a year, which is why it is named alongside Chile and Hawaii as one of the best places on Earth for a dark sky. What changes from one week to the next is not the cloud — it is how much moonlight is washing the sky out.
Book a new-moon week and the Milky Way is a naked-eye object. Book a full-moon week and it is simply not there. Same tour, same guide, same telescope, completely different night.

Moon phase: the one thing to check first
Work out your dates, then check a lunar calendar, then check tour availability — in that order.
Around new moon (the darkest week) the sky is at its best. The galactic band runs overhead with visible dust lanes, and you need nothing but twenty minutes of dark adaptation to see it. Telescopes go after galaxies, nebulae and star clusters, which are exactly the objects moonlight destroys first.
Around first and last quarter you get a compromise that many people prefer: the Moon is genuinely spectacular through a telescope along the terminator, where low sunlight throws crater shadows into relief, and it sets or rises partway through the night, leaving some dark time.
Around full moon the deep sky is gone. A full Moon is roughly as disruptive as a streetlight, and guides will tell you so. What you get instead is the Moon at its brightest — impressive, but flat, because there are no shadows at full phase — plus the planets and the brightest clusters. If those are your only dates, book anyway and set expectations accordingly; it is still a remarkable sky.
One operator’s own listing puts it plainly: the Moon is only visible on certain nights and does not negatively affect the experience, while planets, galaxies and the Milky Way are visible only during certain times of year. Both halves of that sentence are true, and the second half is the one people miss.
What is actually up, by season
The sky rotates through the year, so the season decides which showpieces are available even on a perfect night.
Summer and early autumn (June–October) is the strongest window for most visitors. The galactic centre in Sagittarius — the bright, structured part of the Milky Way — rides high in the evening sky. Saturn’s rings and Jupiter’s Galilean moons are typically in play, and one Teide operator names them specifically as the summer-and-autumn targets. Nights are short and mild, which suits families.
Winter (November–March) trades planets for depth. Nights are long and genuinely dark early, the Orion Nebula is a headline object, and the Pleiades cluster is close to overhead. The trade-off is temperature: operators quote roughly 0–4 °C at the observing sites, before wind chill.
Spring (April–May) is galaxy season — the Virgo and Coma clusters are well placed — which is when the large-aperture tours earn their price. This is also when the difference between an 8-inch and a 32-inch telescope is most obvious, because galaxies are faint and diffuse.
Weather: cloud below you, wind above you
The thing that makes Tenerife’s sky work is the inversion layer. The island’s persistent cloud deck — the mar de nubes — sits below roughly 1,200 m, and so does the coastal light pollution. The observing sites are at 1,400–2,300 m, above both. A grey afternoon in Puerto de la Cruz very often means a perfect night in the caldera, which is why you should never cancel on the basis of the weather where you are staying.
Three things genuinely do close a night:
- Wind. Large telescopes act like sails, and one operator picks its observing site each evening based on wind direction and sends GPS coordinates on the day. Strong wind can cancel outright.
- Cloud reaching altitude. Uncommon, but real, especially in winter storms.
- Calima. A Saharan dust haze that occasionally blows over the Canaries, cutting transparency even when the sky looks clear. Nothing you can plan around, but it explains the odd disappointing night in an otherwise flawless month.
Operators watch the forecast and contact you to reschedule or refund. Almost every tour here also cancels free up to 24 hours ahead. The practical consequence: book a night in the first half of your trip, so a weather call still leaves you time to try again.
What time does the tour start?
Later than you think in summer, earlier than you think in winter — because the start time follows sunset, not the clock.
Pure observing sessions typically begin about forty minutes after sunset, which is roughly when astronomical twilight has faded enough for faint objects to appear. That means a Teide session starting near 21:30 in July and near 18:30 in December, and it is why most operators confirm the exact meeting time by WhatsApp on the afternoon of the tour rather than printing it on the voucher.
Sunset-and-stargazing combinations start earlier still, because they need you at the western viewpoint before the sun goes down.
So when should you book?
If you can choose freely: a clear week either side of new moon, in September or October. Long enough nights, the galactic centre still well placed, planets available, and temperatures that do not require thermal layers.
If your dates are fixed: book anyway, and match the tour to the sky you will get. A full-moon week is a good week for the large-telescope tour, where lunar detail and planetary work still shine. A new-moon week is when the small-group observing session is worth every minute.
